3D Virtual Reality in Nuclear Engineering

Training in and around nuclear facilities is often a challenging task. Factors such as radiation levels as well as likelihood of hindering ongoing operations make it difficult to carry out training at actual sites. Traditional methods of repeating a task over and over again also cannot be realistically employed in many operating facilities. However, a good 3D view of, and some form of interactivity with, the actual system are often necessary for effective and efficient training.

More recently, new tools for training are becoming available that may allow effective training without being physically present in the facility. For example, game engines can be used to develop 3-D, virtual, interactive environments that can be embedded with features suitable for training and education. One such platform for the development and execution of training scenarios is the Unreal Engine. Efforts are underway at the University of Illinois, and at other institutions, to effectively utilize these tools for training and education. For example, a 3D, interactive model of the University of Illinois TRIGA facility has been created, and is being used for different purposes. The model is a fairly realistic representation of the TRIGA facility developed using Unreal Engine III. Unreal Engine III is part of a commercial PC game, Unreal Tournament III, which was released in 2007 by Epic Games.

  Virtual Lab Models

The virtual models below are developed in Unity3D, and they can be played in most web browsers. (Firefox and IE are well tested.) You do need a patch for Unity3D application. If you do not already have the Unity3D patch, starting the applications below will first ask you to download and install the patch. After going through the patching process once, you will be ready to experience the models.

Please note that these are still beta versions, and "in-game" instructions on how to use these labs are still being improved.

In general, you can close the window by simply clicking on the x button to stop an application. You can use the mouse, the arrow keys, or w, a, s, and d keys to move around. e key is usually what you hit to make something happen (when you are close enough). For example, when you get close to the fire extinguisher in the Chem-lab model, hitting e will tell the game that you have found it.
